Pia is one of my favorite English teachers I have ever had.

What I loved most about her class was that learning English never felt mechanical. It was not just about pronunciation rules or correcting mistakes. Pia helped us learn English in a much more natural way, almost like how we learned our first language as children: by listening, noticing, trying, making mistakes, and slowly becoming more comfortable.

She always reminded us that language is for communication. It is not only about speaking correctly, but also about expressing ourselves, listening with curiosity, and understanding other people’s stories and perspectives.

Her classes were full of different kinds of practice. We listened to lectures, conversations, TED talks, podcasts, and real-life English outside the classroom. We practiced note-taking, role plays, and casual conversations. We also reflected on our own habits, challenges, and progress, which helped me become more aware of how I was learning.

Pia is patient, respectful, and truly encouraging. She made the classroom feel warm and safe, so I was not afraid to speak, ask questions, or make mistakes. Learning with her made English feel more alive, more human, and much less intimidating. I would highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn English in a natural and supportive way.

Tuve la oportunidad de tomar dos cursos de ESL con Pia en la Universidad de Virginia, y fue una experiencia excelente. Es una profesora comprometida, con una metodología de enseñanza muy efectiva y clases altamente inmersivas. Diseñó actividades y proyectos que permitían aplicar el inglés en situaciones reales, haciendo el aprendizaje dinámico y significativo.

Uno de los aspectos que más destaco es su capacidad para mantener a los estudiantes motivados durante todo el curso, incluso considerando que las clases eran en horario nocturno y durante el invierno, cuando suele ser más difícil mantener la energía y la participación.

Además, la organización de sus clases fue sobresaliente. Las tareas y proyectos tenían objetivos claros y bien definidos, lo que facilitó el seguimiento del curso y el progreso constante. También proporcionó una gran variedad de recursos adicionales para seguir mejorando el inglés, tanto en contextos académicos como en situaciones cotidianas.

Tomé clases con Pia cuando me estaba adaptando a la vida académica en Estados Unidos, y sus clases me ayudaron mucho. I took Pia's Listening Comprehension and Pronunciation course in the EAP Program at the University of Virginia. As an international student experiencing my first time in the United States, I greatly appreciated the friendly and supportive environment Pia created, which encouraged students to express their opinions confidently. She not only taught essential listening skills and pronunciation features influenced by cultural and regional differences, but also helped identify my weaknesses and provided effective strategies to improve them.
