When I taught Spanish in England and America, I experienced uncomfortable situations because there were cultural issues that I did not understand.
Luckily I met other Spaniards who had arrived in the country before me and clarified many things because they were already familiar with the culture.
They saved me the trouble.
It became clear to me that mediating between cultures was possible and a very valuable skill.
Furthermore, it has been proven that the subtleties of cultural meanings can be taught, so I learned these nuances and apply them in my teaching.
Since I have lived in England and America, I can imagine what aspects of my culture may be shocking to you.
Precisely for that reason I teach Spanish only to English speakers.

Many of the people who immerse themselves in another culture (of which they know little and whose language they do not speak) experience a culture shock that few natives perceive so they don't think to help them. So that this culture shock does not catch you off guard and you can face it without it taking its toll, equip yourself with tools before travelling.
You will learn how to dismiss stereotypes that foreigners have about your culture, incorrect beliefs that you have about theirs, and avoiding frustrating and recurring cultural misunderstandings.
You will learn what to do when it is difficult for you to digest the stereotyped beliefs that you have of the culture of others and you take it badly when they criticize yours.
We will do activities specifically designed to develop your cultural skills that people rarely use and that work much better than the traditional conversation-only ones.
There are concrete ways to detect when you are experiencing a cultural misunderstanding. When you get to know them, the focus you give to your conversations changes radically, as does the results you get.
Knowing how to mediate between cultures, just like an FBI kidnapping negotiator, is a skill within the reach of very few, but doing it better than many is to be expected when you apply the strategies suggested in these lessons.
