Acerca de Carlos A
I’m Carlos, a language teacher, writer and professional translator originally from Los Angeles and based in Barcelona since 2011.
I’m bilingual in English and Spanish and speak Catalan at a professional level. Having learned and used Catalan myself in a multilingual environment, I understand many of the questions and challenges English-speaking learners face, especially when they already speak some Spanish.
I have more than 10 years of experience in teaching, languages and writing. I hold an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco and a BA in English Literature from UCLA, and I’ve taught languages, literature and creative writing in both academic and private settings.
My professional work as a writer, translator and language specialist has also given me a strong understanding of grammar, vocabulary, register and how languages work in real-life contexts. I enjoy helping students make those connections and become more confident using the language outside the classroom.
My teaching style is clear, practical and supportive. I adapt lessons to each student’s goals rather than following exactly the same programme for everyone.

I offer personalised Spanish classes for English-speaking adults, from complete beginners to advanced learners, both online and in person in Barcelona.
I’m Carlos, a bilingual English-Spanish teacher, writer and professional translator. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and have lived in Barcelona since 2011.
Because I speak both English and Spanish at native level, I can explain Spanish clearly through English when necessary and help you understand not only what is correct, but why Spanish works differently from English.
How my Spanish classes work
My approach is practical, communicative and adapted to your goals.
Depending on your level and what you need Spanish for, we can work on:

Lessons are structured, but they aren’t rigid. I adapt the material according to your progress, interests and the situations in which you actually need to use Spanish.
Spanish for everyday life in Spain
If you live in Spain, we can focus on the language you really need outside the classroom.
That might include speaking with neighbours and colleagues, appointments, shops and restaurants, housing, administrative situations, social life and the everyday conversations that can still feel difficult even after years of studying Spanish.
The aim is not simply to memorise vocabulary or grammar rules. It’s to help you become increasingly comfortable actually using Spanish.
Spanish explained for English speakers
English speakers tend to encounter some very specific difficulties with Spanish: verb tenses, ser and estar, por and para, gender, pronouns, the subjunctive and differences in word order and expression.
Because I know both languages at native level, I can explain these differences directly rather than asking you to simply memorise rules without understanding them.
We can also use similarities between English and Spanish strategically while identifying false friends and structures that commonly cause mistakes.
Authentic Spanish, not just textbook exercises
For intermediate and advanced students, I use authentic materials such as articles, videos, podcasts, short stories and other real-world content.
This gives us the opportunity to work with the Spanish people actually speak and write, including vocabulary, register, expressions and cultural context.
Spanish for professionals
I also work with professionals who need Spanish for their job or want to communicate more confidently in a Spanish-speaking workplace.
Lessons can focus on meetings, presentations, professional vocabulary, written communication, interaction with colleagues or clients and situations related specifically to your profession.

I took Spanish (and Catalan) classes with Carlos after moving to Barcelona and wanted to feel more confident speaking in everyday situations.
